Eyelid Surgery (Blepharoplasty)

The most common surgical procedure performed nationwide as well as by Seattle plastic surgeons in our center is eyelid surgery (blepharoplasty). Generally eyelid surgery comprises skin and fat removal of the upper and/or lower eyelids, resulting in a refreshed appearance with a younger looking, firmer eye area. Incisions are made in the crease for the upper eyelids and right beneath the eyelashes for the lower eyelids. If upper eyelid surgery is contemplated, the surgery can be performed under local anesthesia. If lower eyelid surgery is considered, IV sedation ("twilight sedation" or "conscious sedation") is the preferred method of anesthesia. Bruising and swelling is minimal and the down time is around 5 days, with a relatively painless recovery.

Making the Decision for Blepharoplasty

During the pre-surgical consultation, you will be examined and asked to answer queries concerning vision, tear production and use of lenses. Dr. Gaboriau will explain what you can expect from blepharoplasty and take a complete medical history. He will also help you assess whether any additional, complementary surgery such as a simultaneous forehead or brow lift to correct a drooping brow and smooth the forehead, would increase the success of the blepharoplasty. Factors to be weighed include age, skin type, ethnic background, and degree of vision obstruction.

As with all surgery, good health and realistic expectations are prerequisites. A commitment to following Dr. Gaboriau's pre- and post-operative instructions is also required to aid in the success of blepharoplasty or any surgical procedure.
