Hand Care: Sunblock Protection is a must! | No matter how well you take care of the skin on your face, aging will still show on your hands. Using sunblock cream regularly (as you should be doing on your face!) is an important preventative measure to combat the signs of aging. Once sun damage has occurred there are several solutions available to help erase the resulting sunspots and wrinkling of the skin. Following any treatment, it is imperative that you abstain from exposing your skin to direct sunlight or tanning booths. As always, the use of daily sunblock is a must! | | |

Henri's Wine Pick of the Crop! | Chappellet Chenin Blanc 2004 Chappellet Chenin Blanc 2004 is one white wine that I really enjoy with scallops. This Chenin Blanc leads with a touch of ripe citrus and orange zest followed by a hint of pineapple and mango. The Classic Chenin Blanc's delicate floral tone adds a rich layer of complexity that complements the fruit. There is also a nice finish that has a touch of vanilla and spice which brings out the finest hour for my scallops-Henri P. Gaboriau M.D., FACS |

| Issue: # 13 March 31, 2009 | Dear Friends, Colleagues and Patients: Greetings! I think we have just experienced one of the coldest months of March ever on record. Even the crocuses and daffodils look like they are not quite ready to make a complete showing. And yet,the early spring season, no matter how cold or how warm, always reminds me of birth, new beginnings and the power of the earth's renewal. In this month's issue, I am focusing on hand care. In the past, it was easy for people to neglect the care of their hands because so much work involved physical labor. In this age of computers and mass communications, the days of roughhewn outdoor laboring hands are a thing of the past. Yet there is no denying that hands can undergo the aging process as much as our face or any other part of our body. Hands can be the first of all body parts to show your age and treatment and care is needed to keep them looking soft and beautiful. For this month, I have picked a very delicious dish, my Scallops in White Wine Sauce, to be accompanied by a superb Chenin Blanc, and, of course, we have a wellness tip by the Sammamish-based Nutritionist Deborah Enos. I am also announcing that Sammamish Facial now has a Facebook fan page. If you are a Facebook user, please search for Sammamish Facial and be our friend! Kindest Regards, Henri P. Gaboriau M.D., FACS | Treatments for Aging Hands | Fillers: To restore the fullness of your hands and to plump up wrinkled skin, fillers can be injected under the skin. The best filler for this procedure currently is Radiesse. The injections are easy and fast (about 20 minutes total). Some swelling and bruising can be expected, although abstaining from blood thinners such as aspirin and Ibuprofen-based products for a few days prior to your appointment will help reduce the amount of bruising you experience. Usually 2 large syringes of Radiesse are required (one per hand). Photorejuvenation of the hands: Also called IPL (intense pulsed light) and LHE (light & heat energy), photorejuvenation can be used on the hands to smooth out wrinkles and remove sunspots. Several treatments are required at 3-week intervals. The Sciton laser can also be used on the hands with great results, through a combination of MicroLaserPeel and ProFractional treatments. Two to 3 treatments are usually required at 6-to-8 week intervals. Chemical Peels: Superficial peels can be used on the hands (TCA 20%) to treat the sunspots. The skin will turn brown for several days and the peeling process is usually over in less than a week. | What are the signs of aging hands? | Sunspots (brown spots) are the most conspicuous sign of sun damaged skin on the hands. Loss of fat is another sign of aging hands and will show as "skeletal hands" (tendons showing on the tops of the hands). Wrinkled skin is, of course, a sign as well. --HPG | Take Good Care of Your Hands! | --Moisturize your hands often. --Keep moistened. Do not let the skin on your hands become too dry. --Keep a supply of hand moisturizer everywhere (bathroom, vanity, kitchen and bedroom and in your handbag). --Use sunscreen lotion on your hands when going outdoors. --Wear gloves. Protect your hands from dirt, chemicals and detergents by wearing gloves, while doing manual labor or washing dishes. --Get special treatments such as a massage, warm hand baths and herbal remedies to help soften your hands. --Do not use acetone-based polish removers, which tend to dry out nails. --Give your nails a break from color. For a few days months keep your nails bare and free of polish. --Do not remove your cuticles. They are there to protect your nails. | | | Wellness Tip: Deborah Enos, CN | RE: Tips to trick yourself out of late night eating. | According to certified nutritionist Deborah Enos and author of The One-Minute Wellness Coach, "Most people do the most damage to their weight loss plans by too much late night eating. Late night eating is actually overeating and is almost always an emotional habit that is induced by stress or boredom. The best way to stop this habit is to keep your hands or mouth busy with another activity. Try some of the following tricks to help break this habit: 1. Brush your teeth right after dinner. 2. Drink a cup of hot tea or hot chocolate. 3. Paint your nails! You won't be able to grab any snacks without wrecking your manicure." | Henri's Scallops in White Wine Sauce | This meal is a delightful spring treat! 30 min prep| 25 min cook time | SERVES 2 to 4 · 3 tablespoons olive oil · 1 small onion, chopped · 8 garlic cloves, minced · 12 ounces scallops (small) · 1/2 cup very dry white wine · 2 tablespoons of fresh parsley · 1/4 teaspoon crushed red pepper flakes · 2 tablespoons chicken base · 3 tablespoons butter · salt and pepper · 1/2 lemon, juice of · 3 tablespoons Parmesan cheese, grated DIRECTIONS 1. Heat olive oil over medium-high heat. 2. Add garlic and onions. 3. Stir constantly for 1 minute. 4. Add scallops. 5. Continue stirring for 2 minutes. 6. Add wine, red pepper, chicken base. 7. Allow to simmer 2 minutes. 8. When cooked, the scallops will be opaque. 9. Add butter, lemon juice, salt and pepper. 10. Sprinkle with chopped fresh parsley and grated cheese. 11. Toss with angel hair pasta Aglio e Olio (olive oil, finely minced garlic and parmesan cheese) 12. Serve with crusty French bread. Serves 2 to 4. This meal is so tantalizing that I can hardly wait to try it again. The scallops do not have to be served with a pasta side dish. A wonderful rice or risotto would work well as a side dish too. I like to add a salad with large wedges of romaine lettuce, a few walnuts and a hint of blue cheese with some chunks of pear, all drizzled with olive oil. Bon Appetit!! -Henri P.
